Insurance

I only accept most Aetna commercial plans through Alma.

Contact customer service for all other insurance panels and inquire about your plan’s Out of Network benefits for reimbursement options.

The majority of my practice is private pay for several reasons:

  • I want to maintain your confidentiality as much as possible.  However, when you use insurance, your medical record is subject to be reviewed by the insurance company.  They typically determine the type and length of treatment that they believe you should have.  Therefore, I believe the treatment type and length should be discussed and agreed upon between the client and the therapist, not an insurance company.
  • Insurance requires a diagnosis and will cover sessions only if they deem it to be “medically necessary.” It is my belief that we are human beings living a human experience and should not be limited to a diagnosis.  No one should be able to determine how many sessions you need except for you and your therapist.  They also can withdraw approval long after the sessions have been rendered, which may leave you with having to pay out of pocket unexpectedly anyway.
  • Mental Health Treatment becomes a part of your permanent health record.  If you ever apply for a job requiring a security clearance or apply with certain life insurance companies, they may view certain mental health diagnoses as a “pre-existing” condition.
  • Because I mainly accept private pay, I can have a lower caseload to avoid “therapist burnout”, which means you will have more availability to book sessions with me more consistently and freely, versus therapists who take insurance and typically stay booked and busy, leaving you uneasy regarding having consistent and continual care.

In conclusion, the choice is always yours.  However, it’s always important to be informed as you decide how to invest in your mental health.
