4 Ways to Reclaim Your Nervous System in a World That Won’t Slow Down
Whew. There is a lot happening right now.
Politically, socially, and globally. And it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. I remember there was such a push to “get back to normal” during the 2020 pandemic but maybe it’s just me, but nothing really seems “normal” anymore. Every day, there is something going on that causes outrage, grief, or some sense of bewilderment.
It’s a lot.
And if you’re a high-performing Black woman who is used to holding it all together, you may feel the pressure to keep producing, keep leading, keep showing up… no matter how heavy things feel.
But your nervous system knows the truth.
It knows when you’ve been bracing.
It knows when you’re tired.
It knows when you need safety, not strength.
In a climate filled with uncertainty and chaos, reclaiming your nervous system is one of the most necessary things that you can do for yourself.
It is how you stay whole.
What’s Really Happening in Your Body
When headlines feel relentless, and the stakes feel personal, your body can easily shift into survival mode. Here are a few signs that your nervous system is disrupted:
· Tight jaw
· Shallow breathing
· Racing thoughts
· Irritability or numbness
· Exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix
You are not making this up. You are not being dramatic. It is just your nervous system trying to protect you, and while we cannot control what is going on outside of us, we can pause to create moments of regulation within ourselves.
4 Ways to Gently Reclaim Your Calm
1. Limit media consumption. You are not required to consume every update. Limit when and how you take in news. Protect your peace like it matters. Because it does. Say to yourself, “I will observe, but will not absorb.”
2. Regulate Before You React Before responding to a post, a conversation, or a stressor, pause. Feel your feet on the floor. Place one hand on your chest. Take three slow breaths.
Then respond... Or don’t.
3. Move the Stress Through Regulating the body does not look the same in all cases. Listen to what the body needs. Take a walk. Do a few stretches. Shake out your hands. Scream into a pillow. Trauma and stress live in the body. It needs to pass through.
4. Anchor in What Is Steady Deepen your faith. Be more intentional about living in community. Create rituals in your routine that make you feel safe, creative, or at ease. Book a therapy session. Reinforce and protect your boundaries. Choose what helps you feel rooted instead of reactive.
Journal Prompts for This Season
Grab your journal or Notes app and reflect:
· Where in my body do I feel the impact of this political climate most?
· What am I carrying that isn’t mine to hold? How can I release it?
· What would protecting my nervous system look like this week?
· How can I stay informed without staying inflamed?
· What feels steady and safe for me right now?
You don’t have to solve everything to deserve peace. Just find a moment to just be.

An Invitation: Mindfulness Gathering for High-Performing Black Women
If you’ve been feeling on edge, exhausted, or quietly overwhelmed, I want you to know you don’t have to navigate this alone. I’m hosting a mindfulness gathering specifically for high-performing Black women who are ready to exhale and just be.
This will be a space to learn how mindfulness can help regulate your nervous system, practice some gentle reflection, and integrate this tool into everyday life. No pressure. No performance. Just presence.
If your body is craving safety, this is your invitation.
A final reminder:
You can care about justice and still protect your nervous system. You can stay engaged and still rest. You can be powerful and soft at the same time.
You do not have to carry it all to be worthy.
